What training is required to become a dentist?

The dental undergraduate course is a five year, full-time university course leading to a degree of Bachelor of Dental Science.

Prospective dental students should complete Year 12, which should be at least 35 in VCE Units 3 and 4 in each of English (any) and Chemistry and one of Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics or Physics. Satisfactory completion of the VCE with an ENTER score of at least 96.00 is required for applicants to be eligible for consideration and a weighted UMAT score above the 20th percentile.

Each university sets a quota on the number of entrants to the dental course.

In the first year or two of the course study consists largely of basic sciences and a general introduction to dentistry. This is followed by more specialised training in the theory and practice of dentistry and clinical study is emphasised.
